 Genre Research

 Romance

The target audience for romance films are usually women, 85% of romance films' audience is made up of women.

Some conventions within content for the genre romance are, object of desire, that is the protagonist's external object of desire is an intimate relationship, then there is the central love story, this is when the love story is developed, then one of the most important parts, emotional tension, this is when the characters explore their feelings, overcome obstacles and grow closer, another important one is character-driven plot, which means that the film is driven by the characters and their emotions instead of action and external events, the next one is conflict, that is when the relationship faces internal or external issues, which tests the characters love for each other, and the last one is of course, the happy ending, which is when the characters commit to a long-term, serious relationship after overcoming their conflicts.

Some conventions within production technique in romance films are the setting, usually takes place in romantic setting like the beach, popular cities and country side, the characters of course, and how they meet, they can often meet by accident and having them no think anything of it and seeing each other again, they want different things at this point, but soon come together to develop a relationship, the plot is another genre convention, there needs to be a conflict between the two characters, any type of issue like long distance relationships, falling in love with another person, getting sick, family issues, having an ex come back, etc. iconography is also another genre convention within production, this is when there are objects that symbolize love, usually flowers, another convention is mood, the characters mood affects the scene heavily, and last but not least, cinematic style, using different types of shots that fit in with the romance genre, that can really show the emotions of characters, romance is all about emotions and feelings, so the viewers need to be able to capture it.

Some institutional conventions for romance are narrative, romance films often have a narrator explaining what is happening from an outside view, or one of the main characters is the narrator themselves, another institutional convention is how the film is marketed, because it depends on the genre and how it will be easier to reach the intended audience, romance films can be marketed by social media posts, since most of the audience are women, the film producers can post about it online and try to reach the audience, another way is to create a trailer and make sure its engaging and shows a lot about the movie without of course, spoiling it.

A romance film that I think is really good is The Notebook. It is about two 17 year olds, the guy, Noah, instantly falls for Allie, but she doesn't fall for him. Noah keeps on trying until she agrees to go out with him, they get super close and both of them fall in love with each other. They spend a whole summer together, seeing each other everyday, but Allie's dad doesn't approve of Noah, and after that summer Allie and her family move away. Noah writes letter for her everyday for a year, but her mom hides it from her, and when they finally see each other again Allie realizes that Noah didn't just forget about her, but it's too late because Allie is engaged, but Noah keep fighting for her. They then get back together, and at the end of the movie it shows them both at a retirement home, Noah is visiting Allie, and she has alzheimers. They both lay in her bed, holding hands, and they both peacefully pass away together. This movie is so amazing and its a great example of romance because even though a lot happened between them, they always found their way back to each other, and them passing away together is such a great ending because it shows that they can't live without each other.

Another great romance film is 10 Thinks I Hate About You. This movie is about a teenage girl, Kat, whose little sister, Bianca, wants to go out with a boy, but their dad says that she can only go out if Kat gets a date, thinking that she won't. The boy that Bianca wants to go out with, Joey, finds a guy to go out with Kat, his name is Patrick. Joey starts paying him to talk to her and take her out, so that he can do the same with her sister. But Patrick and Kat end up falling for each other, until cat finds out that he was getting payed all along and gets super upset. She then writes a poem for her class, the poem talks about thinks she hates about Patrick, that's why the movie is called "10 Things I Hate About You," and reads it in front of the class, while Patrick listens and regrets everything because he actually fell in love with her. Patrick tells Joey that he doesn't want the money anymore, and apologizes to cat, she forgives him and they get back together. While Bianca and Joey also break up because of what he did to her sister, and Bianca falls for Cameron, a guy who learned French for her so he could tutor her, and was always there for her. This is also a great romance because it shows that he didn't care about the money, he fell in love with her for her and gave up all the money he was being offered so he could be with her.

 Representation in Suits

In the show Suits, the lawyers are represented and rich, self-centered, and smart people. They wear fancy clothes like suits, dresses and skirts. The stereotypes that appear in suits are that they are rich, only care about money, and would do anything for money. Harvey Spector is a super rich lawyer. He cares about money and about his reputation so much, he's mainly represented as a self-centered person who only cares about himself and would do anything for his job and for money.

Not only Harvey Spector, but most lawyers in Suits are represented like that. Harvey wears very formal clothes like suits and ties on the daily. Another lawyer that is represented as a self-centered person who cares a lot about money is Jessica Pearson. She is also a very rich person, she cares a lot about her firm and about winning cases.

Overall, Suits represents most of the lawyers like that. The whole show is about lawyers so that's quite literally all you'll see. I think it's so entertaining to see them win cases and work together to defend their clients. They are also represented as people who would do anything to win a case and to help their clients. I think the representation is pretty accurate.

Sound Project

 Sound Project

During this lesson I learned about all different types of sounds that can be used, and when they are best used. I also learned about foley sounds, which I found so interesting. I loved seeing how a lot of sounds are made and how creative foley sounds can be.

The directions for this project were to create a a scene with only sounds, no visuals at all, and the scene was supposed to be 1 minute. We also could only use 7 words or less in our project, so it was mainly sounds. We had to create at least 4 foley sounds, and we were given sound effects databases to help us find audios for the project.

During brainstorming me and my partner came up with the scene we were going to do. For our outline we wrote the scene and what audios that were going to be used, the outline was super helpful because it gave us an idea of what to look for and we were able to mark it off once we found the audio we liked. The editing app that I used was Premiere Rush.

I think something that we did well was finding the audios and putting them together well, I think they all came together to make a good and realistic audio. On the other hand, my foley sound could've been better, I opened and closed the car door and then opened and closed the trunk, but I think I could've picked another audio to do foley and done something more creative. I also think I need to work on editing better, while I don't think it was terrible, it was definitely not the best.
